A Mat For The New Millenium
By Laura Compton
![]() |
When Burlingame's Annie Appleby started selling Yoga Force clothing in 1995, there weren't many hip lines out there. Now, with the number of practitioners up to 16.5 million people, according to a recent Yoga Journal study, the fashion has flowed. But mats haven't kept pace with the market, which is now almost $3 billion for classes and products, the study estimated. So after three prototypes, Appleby finally came up with a mat that offers a new twist -- a tapered shape and orange lines to encourage proper feet and hand alignment during asanas. It rolls up into a self-contained unit. "You're all set -- you've got a mat, a carrying case, a yoga purse," Apppleby says. It's something she herself can use: She teaches hatha power yoga at various Peninsula gyms, including the YMCA San Mateo and Evolve in Burlingame, and sometimes for private clients in New York and Los Angeles. -- L.C. |
